New Superpave placement,

longitudinal joint guidelines

available from NAPA

The National Asphalt Pavement Association (NAPA) has released new, concise but definitive publications for those who design, place and own asphalt pavements.

Superpave Construction Guidelines analyzes problems that have been encountered with coarse-graded Superpave mixes, and construction issues that may be different from those encountered when using conventional Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) mixes.

While the performance of Superpave-designed mixes has been good to date, some problems in production and placement have been experienced. NAPA and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) sponsored a colloquium on the subject, and the report is the outcome of that discussion.

The 20-page booklet is $12, plus shipping and handling. It is available to NAPA Members at $6 per copy. Quantity discounts are available.

Also, NAPA released Longitudinal Joints: Problems & Solutions. The publication discusses construction of durable longitudinal joints as a critical element in the longevity of Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) pavements.

Achieving uniform density both longitudinally and transversely on the pavement will assist in meeting the goal of high-performance HMA pavements. This publication identifies proper techniques that have been successfully used to construct good longitudinal joints. It was developed through a cooperative effort of NAPA and the Construction Industry Manufacturers Association (CIMA).

The list price for the 10-page publication is $8, plus shipping and handling ($4 for NAPA members).

NAPA's toll-free order line is (888) 468-6499. Orders may also be placed via fax to the Publications Department at 301-731-4621, or on-line via the NAPA home page at www.hotmix.org. Credit card payments are accepted. NAPA is located at 5100 Forbes Blvd., Lanham, MD 20706-4413.
